Emigrants from Loth & Kildonan

Emigrant lists drawn up by the Sutherland Estate management list emigrants from parishes in the east of Sutherland during a period of intense emigration. Included here are those who emigrated to Canada in 1829, 1830, 1831, 1841, 1842, 1844, 1847.

It should not be assumed that these lists provide a complete record of all emigrants from this part of Sutherland in this period. The lists are contained in the Sutherland Papers in the National Library of Scotland and appear by permission of the Countess of Sutherland. Adapted here from the original transcriptions by Malcolm Bangor-Jones. Some lists indicate that the people left for America but most went to Canada.
The following people left from Loth & Kildonan parishes – under surname each person is shown by Christian name, place of residence, tenant, servant, etc., followed by number in party who left and when. As always all Mc and Mac names are shown here as Mac.

Gartymore 1817

Garstiemhor (the big field)

The small crofting township of Gartymore near Helmsdale, Loth (nowadays Kildonan) was created at the beginning of the 19th century at the time of the Clearances when hundreds of families were forcibly removed by the House of Sutherland from their native straths. The people allocated ground tiny pieces of land at Gartymore had to build their own houses, work the boggy land and somehow survive on the steep hillsides. It was hoped that they would take up fishing but they did not. The continued to live as crofters. Today at Gartymore there are over 50 ruined crofts.

1826 Militia Lists

1826 Loth & Kildonan Militia List

Parish of Loth: Militia List, made pursuant to the Directions of sundry Acts for raising a Militia Force in Scotland 1826. Transcribed from original papers by Malcolm Bangor - Jones and adapted for use here by Christine Stokes.
As you can see this list was created in Loth parish but as so many of the places named are nowadays part of Kildonan it should be read as both. There is also at least one entry that refers to a place in Clyne parish.
Surname followed by name, rank or occupation, residence, whether the person is aged under or over 30 years plus any notes regarding infirmity of unfitness for service or grounds of exemption claimed. It may look as though I have duplicated some names but there was that number of men with that name in that place. As usual all Mc and Mac names are shown here as Mac.

Note: where it states a man had 3 children under 10, I think we can take that as 3 being the number which allowed him to opt out – he may have had more! Where a man is aged over 30 it means he is less than 45. Where he is said to be under 30 he is over 18 and less than 30. The sworn statement which appears at the end of the original claims this list to be all the men residing within the Parish of Loth between the ages of 18 & 45. This makes it a very useful list. Good indication of the surnames in a particular area also.
